Big Results Since the French Open

5 08 2009

I’ve decided that since I’ve been gone for several months, I will post a list of important results that have occurred since I’ve stopped posting. They are as followed:

Grand Slams:

Men:

  • Andy Roddick reached the final of Wimbledon for the third time in his career, but lost to Roger Federer in one of the most legendary slam finals of all time. The score was 5-7 7-6(6) 7-6(5) 3-6 16-14

  • Jesse Levine reached the third round of Wimbledon, for his best ever showing at a Grand Slam.

Women:

  • Serena Williams won her third Wimbledon title, defeating sister Venus Williams in the final 7-6(3) 6-2. Earlier in the semi finals Serena saved match point against number 3 seed Elena Dementieva.
  • Serena Williams and Venus Williams won their second straight and fourth total Wimbledon doubles title against Australians Samantha Stosur and Renee Stubbs 7-6(4) 6-4
  • 17 year old Melanie Oudin made it to the 4th round before losing to Agnieszka Radwanska. She defeated world number 6 and former world number 1 Jelena Jankovic along the way. This was the furthest an American teen has advanced in a grand slam since Serena Williams won the US Open in 1999.

ATP Tournaments:

  • Three American men found success at the AEGON championships, the first warm up for Wimbledon. James Blake finished runner up to Andy Murray, Andy Roddick made the semi finals before retiring, and Mardy Fish made the quarter finals.
  • At the first tournament since Wimbledon in Newport, Rhode Island, Rajeev Ram won the title as a lucky loser in three sets over fellow American, Sam Querrey. Ram also won the doubles title, sweeping the event. Americans Jesse Levine, Brendan Evans, and Kevin Kim were quarter finalists at the event.
  • At the Indianapolis Tennis Championships, the first event of the Olympus US Open Series, Sam Querrey reached his second straight final, but lost in straight sets to compatriot Robby Ginepri. John Isner was a semi finalist at the event, and Wayne Odesnik and Alex Bogomolov Jr. were quarter finalists.
  • At the Los Angeles Tennis Open, Sam Querrey reached his third straight final (4th of the year) and won in three sets. It was Querrey’s second career title. John Isner and Mardy Fish were quarter finalists at the event.

WTA Tournaments:

  • Venus Williams reached the finals of the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, but lost to Marion Bartoli in three sets. Serena Williams reached the quarter finals, but was upset in three sets by Australian Samantha Stosur. The Williams sisters won the doubles title in straight sets over Yung-Jan Chan and Monica Niculescu.

Men’s Challengers and Futures:

  • At the 50k AEGON Trophy Wimbledon warm up challenger, Brendan Evans won in three sets. Robert Kendrick reached the quarter finals.

  • Blake Strode won the 10k USA F18.
  • Alex Domijan reached the final of the 10k USA F19, but had to retire while leading 7-6 5-5.

Women’s ITF Circuit:

  • At the 10k Hilton Head ITF, Alexandra Mueller won the title over compatriot Alison Riske in three sets.
  • At the 25k El Paso ITF, Mashona Washington reached the final. Kim Couts was a semifinalist. Audra Cohen and Ashley Weinhold were quarterfinalists.

  • At the 50k Boston ITF, teen Alison Riske continued her good form and reached the semifinals, along with Madison Brengle. Alexandra Stevenson and Alexandra Mueller were quarterfinalists.
  • At the 50k Grapevine ITF, college player Irina Falconi made the semifinals. Mallory Cecil, reigning NCAA champ reached the quarterfinals before retiring due to injury.
  • At the 10k Atlanta ITF, Irina Falconi continued her good form winning the title over Jennifer Elie. Alison Riske and Lindsey Nelson made the semifinals.
  • At the 50k Lexington ITF, Ahsha Rolle, Madison Brengle, Lilia Osterloh, and Lindsay Lee-Waters were all quarterfinalists.
  • At the 10k Evansville ITF, Elizabeth Lumpkin defeated Kaitlyn Christian to win the title. The real story here was 14 year old prodigy Sachia Vickery who reached the semifinals here at her first ever pro tournament. Ester Goldfeld also reached the semifinals.
  • At the 10k Joplin ITF, Irina Falconi proved to be still on fire. She won the singles title over Caitlin Whoriskey and the doubles title with Ashley Weinhold. Sabrina Santamaria and Maria Sanchez were semifinalists.

Well I hope this is a good, comprehensive update. Later today or tomorrow I will post everything that has been going on at the tournaments in LA and Washington this week. I will also post results from the ITF/Challenger in Vancouver. Expect the lists of ATP/WTA players to be updated this weekend. Some new faces will appear, while a few players will be dropped.

Return!

31 07 2009

Yes, readers, it’s true. I’m finally coming back! I will hope to resume daily updates for the week of the 3rd! I will also be updating the list of ATP and WTA players. There are some new faces to both lists. Some have also been removed. Stay tuned! =)

Hiatus

9 06 2009

Sorry for the unexpected absence, especially in the middle of a grand slam. I would like to tell you that I’m back, but unfortunately, that’s not the case. I am taking a hiatus from the blog, as my life has gotten busier and with summer starting, I have less time to devote to it. Look for me to be back around Wimbledon, or the week after it’s over.
